biography

As the daughter of Rank No. 2 magical girl, Maiko-chan, Mirror-chan started training from a young age to follow in her mother’s footsteps. She made her debut in GMT+9 at ten years old, and quickly rose in the rankings. By the time she was 12 years old, she was ranked No. 20, and sold millions of dollars worth of merchandise. Suddenly, she disappeared from her timezone, reappeared in GMT-5, and started working for a new company. Her truest fans were really confused, but they still support her, which keeps her in the Top 50 in her old timezone. Sometimes she’ll pop up in GMT+9, just to thank them.

Fun Facts

  • Her haters say that her mother’s popularity made Mirror-chan rise in the rankings so quickly. Mirror-chan rejects that idea because she’s barely broken into the Top 20. “If Mom could make me popular, she would have made me No. 2,” she said.
  • Some of Mirror-chan’s merchandise was criticized for being too inappropriate, specifically the body pillows. Bishoujo Magika released a statement saying, “All of our merchandise is focus-group tested and approved by Mirror-chan and her mother before release.”
  • Mirror-chan has a short temper and has been known to fight with other magical girls.
  • Mirror-chan runs Magical Girl Studios, and produces most of the merchandise.

Author's Notes

When I first created the comic, I imagined Mirror-chan with spikey, upright hair. But I couldn’t draw her hair the same way each time, so I eventually let her hair down. I wanted my main character to be blonde, but also a tomboy. And I didn’t want her to have long hair and a skirt. Magical girls always have super long hair and wear skirts. That trope is overplayed. Instead, I chose the “superhero” look, with a leotard and cape.

I wanted to create the opposite of Sailor Moon. Throughout the first season of that anime, Sailor Moon whined and cried and was SO ANNOYING. But by season 4, Sailor Moon was kicking ass, easily. That’s the type of magical girl I wanted. That’s why I opted for a main character who was a seasoned professional.
